Did Blowing into Nintendo Cartridges Really Help?

We are all guilty of it, blowing on our carts to get them to work. Here is a great article about why you shouldn’t. I use alcohol and q-tips to clean my carts with great results. If that doesn’t work I will take the cart apart and use an eraser on the contacts.

So, dear readers, all signs point to no: blowing in the cartridge did not help. My money is on the blowing thing being a pure placebo, offering the user just another chance at getting a good connection. The problems with Nintendo’s connector system are well-documented, and most of them are mechanical — they just wore out faster than expected.

Having said that, it’s true that kids can be grubby, and getting crud into the cartridge or slot was a real problem — I suspect that most of that crud was not just dust, though, and required a more thorough cleaning than a moist mouth-blast could provide. In fact, Nintendo released an official NES Cleaning Kit in 1989 in an attempt to keep both the slot and cartridges clean. Ultimately, Nintendo redesigned the NES console, releasing an NES 2 console in 1993 that’s commonly known as the “top loader.” Its main feature? A top loading slot. It was more like the original Famicom, using a slot that held up better to abuse. Similarly, the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) was a top loader.

This is one amazing machine that I am firmly convinced is made with voodoo and witchcraft. The AR Cards are fantastic to play with. Slap a card down and out pops a character right there on your table.  They are even interactive and one has games that you play with it. I can not get over how much fun it is to shoot at targets that are appearing on my desk.

I have not been this excited about a console in years and can’t wait to play all the games I have downloaded and see where Nintendo goes from here. I will admit I don’t use the 3D as it gives me a headache but from what I did watch it is very well done. I have already been told that I need to pick up the new Kid Icarus and the latest Mario Kart. Nintendo hit a home run with this one in my opinion.

I am so happy to have this system to match my Zelda DS Lite. Now I just need the Zelda GBA.

Today’s Haul

My haul for June 9, 2010
I'm happy

I racked up 16 games today for right at $25. The Gyromite even has the famicom converter! I really can’t wait to play Shinobi & Rolling Thunder. I also plan on finally winning Golgo 13. I do have a few really bad games, The Karate Kid & Back to the Future 2 & 3 for starts. I haven’t played Captain Skyhawk or Cobra Triangle but I do remember winning Clash at Demonhead.

Here is a picture of the two famicom converters I have found so far. The left one is from Hogan’s Alley and the right is from the Gyromite I bought today. Now I just need to buy a famicom game.

I also got my Club Nintendo reward this week. I decided to get the Hanafuda card set over the Game & Watch collection 2. I figured I should own the product that Nintendo started out making way back in 1889. The cards are smaller than I thought they would be, the case for them looks fantastic. I have decided not to open them, instead they will sit on my bookcase with my other collectibles.
